FAQ

FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

  • Can you update a document if I only have a .pdf format version?

  • Yes. There are a variety of ways we can work with .pdf files, by extracting the text and restructuring it in any new format.

  • Can you convert a MAC file for use on WINDOWS OS?

  • Almost certainly yes, but it depends on the original format.

  • What is image vectoring?
  • A vectored image is defined by a series of point and lines that makes it possible to re-proportion the image without losing visual resolution, unlike raster images that consist of a series of coloured pixels, which tend to lose definition when enlarges.

  • What is a “browsable” pdf?

  • PDF (or portable document format) is a file format readable by means of a free application. Over time it has become one of the most widely used document formats on the Internet. As the complexity of web documents increased over the years, the application has been continually upgraded to keep pace, and this led to the development of ‘browsable’ pdf’s, or pdf’s you can browse through using links, bookmarks and search functions.

Clicking on the links in the document contents takes you to the selected page, and the bookmarks take you to the references quoted in the text (for example, to an illustration).

  • What is a Translation Memory (TM)? And a CAT Tool?
  • A Translation Memory is a database that makes the process of translation more precise and efficient. It consists of translation units, each made up of a segment of source text coupled with the corresponding translation in the required target language. Every time the same segment is repeated in the text, the CAT (or Computer Aided Translation Tool), that is to say, the software that manages the TM and translation process, presents the corresponding translation, meaning the translator never has to translate the same phrase twice, and above all maintains the coherence of the terminology, especially in complex and frequently repetitive documents like technical manuals. However, it is important to stress that these TM’s are always created and used by professional translators whose job it is to make certain the translations are always perfectly localised, making any necessary adjustments to the existing translation and adding new translations wherever missing in the memory.
